We're Back!
- August 13, 2024
It’s good to be back! On this, the (belated!) one year anniversary of the comic, I’m so excited to be diving into the next chapter of our story. There’s some really cool stuff coming.
I’ve been spending the last few months working hard to build a buffer of future pages. If there’s one thing I learned from my first year of illustrating this webcomic, it’s the importance of working ahead! Life is so much better when you’re not racing to finish a page on the day it gets posted. Obviously, this helps me maintain my sanity as the illustrator, but it also gives me space to step back and do more fun ‘big picture’ thinking about the comic as I go.
Speaking of which — one thing that I’ve really wanted to do is spend time to flesh out the world around Jea, through art and stories and doodles and other bits of extra content. If you’ve ever read James Gurney’s Dinotopia series, you know exactly what I’m reaching for here. I love the way those books use the pastiche of a scientist’s journal or sketchbook to build on the lore of the world.
So… Welcome to the Orrery!
This is a huge illustration that I’ve been working on all summer. Jea’s heading back down to the village now, but she’ll be back soon. Better familiarize yourself:
Our first glimpse of the Orrery was through the back door, so to speak. Jea arrives at the not-so-secret entrance after a strenuous hike up from the flat wastelands of the Kut.
The ancient labyrinthine passages carry her through the cavernous bowels of the mountain…
Before delivering her to Oba’s workshop.
I’ll be honest: I’m not quite sure where extra worldbuilding stuff like this should live. I don’t want to interrupt the flow of the comic for ‘lore’ posts, but I also don’t want to hide them away in a wiki somewhere. I started a Patreon when the comic launched — there’s a free tier available that you don’t even need an account to follow, and I’ve been using it as a hub for news and behind-the-scenes stuff (you should follow for updates, btw!). Maybe it would also be a good spot for worldbuilding, too? I’m just thinking out loud now.
I’d love to hear what you think, and I’m looking forward to seeing you back here every Tuesday for new comic pages!
