Walk Softly but Carry a Big Stick

Lucas —

A couple weeks ago I shared some early concepts for the Windnets. By the end of that process, it felt like I was circling some good ideas without really landing on anything that resonated.

Even the clockwork guts of the building — the mechanism that worked the enormous Windnets — was pretty much settled in my head … but it hadn’t quite ‘clicked’.

But a breakthrough came from this quick thumbnail sketch. I think I was looking at a picture of a mountain village — the heaving ground forced the buildings to stumble and tumble over each other as they strained up the slope. I thought ‘what if you just took the mountain away and left the buildings hanging in the air?’

And it finally clicked. I think it’s because this is the first time the Windnets felt like a living, growing thing, instead of just a building sat on the cantilevered precipice like a lollipop on a stick.

It really did feel like I had accidentally stumbled across the finish line after running a marathon with a blindfold on. From there it was just a matter of massaging the forms into something concrete…
