Summer Update!

Lucas —

We’ll be back next week with new pages! But in light of recent story developments, it seemed like a good time to update the landing page animation, as Jea dashes back to the village to warn everyone.

This is one of my favourite things to do for the comic, as the website itself evolves to reflect the latest story beats. Updating the animation this time was a big task, mostly due to the complex design of Jea’s signature poncho. The big baggy mass of fabric billows in the wind and bounces as she runs, and it took a lot of planning (and a few animated dead-ends) to get it feeling right.

Here’s breakdown of my animation process:

To help break down the motion, I ‘hung’ her poncho off her shoulders, animating the centerline of the cloth trailing behind her to ripple in the wind while also following the up-and-down motion of her run. The outer seams of the poncho came next, being pulled by her arms, but dragged back by the mass of billowing fabric.

It took a few tries to get the right balance between a feel of speed and weight for her clothing, but I’m really happy with the result!
